Popcorn ceilings are a common feature in many older homes, but they can be an eyesore. Fortunately, with a bit of effort and the right materials, you can easily cover up unsightly popcorn ceilings. This guide will walk you through the entire process, from choosing the right material to applying the covering and ensuring a beautiful, professional finish.

Choosing the Right Material

The best material for covering popcorn ceilings is drywall. Drywall is strong and durable, and it will provide the best coverage and longest-lasting finish. When selecting drywall, it’s important to choose the right thickness for the job. Generally, a 1/2-inch or 5/8-inch drywall will be sufficient, although thicker drywall may be necessary for ceilings with heavy texture or other irregularities.

Preparing the Ceiling

Before you begin covering the popcorn ceiling, you’ll need to prepare the surface. Start by vacuuming the ceiling to remove any excess dust and debris. Next, use a damp rag to wipe down the ceiling and remove any remaining dirt. Finally, apply a coat of drywall mud to any imperfections in the ceiling, such as cracks or holes. Let the drywall mud dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Attaching the Drywall

Once the ceiling is prepped and the drywall has been selected, it’s time to attach the drywall to the ceiling. Start by marking off the area you’ll be covering with drywall. Use a level to make sure the drywall is even and straight. Then, use drywall screws to attach the drywall to the ceiling. Make sure the screws are driven in straight and level, and space them about 12 inches apart.

Applying the Finishing Touches

Once the drywall is attached to the ceiling, it’s time to apply the finishing touches. Use drywall tape to cover any seams and joints, and then apply a thin layer of drywall mud to the entire surface. Let the mud dry completely, and then sand it down to create a smooth, even finish. Finally, apply a coat of primer and paint to complete the project and create a beautiful, professional finish.
