Popcorn ceilings, also known as acoustic ceiling, are a common feature in many older homes. While they may look dated, they do offer noise reduction and insulation benefits. However, if you’re looking to update your home’s look, you’ll likely want to remove the popcorn ceiling. Taking down a popcorn ceiling is a messy job, but not overly difficult. Here’s how to do it safely and properly.
Gather Your Supplies
Before you begin, make sure you have all the necessary supplies. This includes:
- Protective eye wear
- Dust mask
- Stepladder
- Putty knife
- Drop cloths
- Sponge
- Bucket
- TSP-PF*
Preparing the Room
Before you start, you’ll need to prepare the room. This includes:
- Remove any furniture or items from the room.
- Cover the floor with drop cloths to protect from any debris.
- Cover any vents with plastic sheeting to prevent dust from entering the ductwork.
- Open windows for ventilation.
- Wear protective eye-wear, a dust mask, and old clothing.
Start Scraping
Once you have the room ready, you can start scraping the popcorn ceiling. Begin by wetting down the ceiling with a sponge. This will help to soften the material so it’s easier to remove. Use a putty knife to scrape off the popcorn. Be careful not to gouge the drywall. As you scrape, the popcorn will become a pile of dust on the ground.
Clean Up
After you have scraped off the popcorn, you’ll need to clean up the mess. Use a vacuum to remove the debris from the floor. Then, mix a solution of TSP-PF* and water in a bucket. Use a sponge to wipe the walls and ceiling with the solution to remove any remaining dust. Once the walls and ceiling are completely clean, you can rinse the sponge and use it to remove the solution.
Finishing Touches
Once the walls and ceiling are clean, you’ll need to apply a new texture. This can be done by spraying a textured paint, using a roller and textured paint, or using a drywall trowel. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully. After the texture is applied, you’ll need to prime and paint the walls and ceiling. Taking down a popcorn ceiling is a messy job, but it doesn’t have to be difficult. With the right supplies and a bit of patience, you can easily remove your popcorn ceiling and update the look of your home.
